GNS3 really shines with the vendor support and interoperability it provides here. There are tons of options and a wide variety of vendors. You can take a look at the appliances here. The exciting thing about the appliances is there are tons of them. The appliances are basically templates that provide the framework of settings and such to GNS3 so it can correctly import various images and such. The easiest way to import your VIRL images into GNS3 is by means of the GNS3 Appliance. I have seen my changes wiped out otherwise. With the GNS3 interface, one action I have noticed to be crucial to saving your changes is hitting the Apply button and not just the OK button on these configuration dialogs. You can also enable authentication or not.Īs you see below, the Remote GNS3 VM will become populated with the server information you entered above. You will then fill in the IP address that was configured on your GNS3 VM. To point correctly to the remote VM, we need to go to Edit > Preferences > Server and click on the GNS3 VM server tab and then select the Remote radio button. As you can see, selecting the VMware radio button gives us an image of the VMware Workstation banner. The next screen confirms our assumption here. The Local GNS3 VM assumes we are wanting to point to a local VM such as found in VMware Workstation. One confusing thing I see with the behavior here is you have no option for remote serverwhich is what we want to configure. When you first launch GNS3, you will be prompted with a wizard of sorts here. Below, we are just showing the first and last screens of the installs as the install is pretty mindless. Configuring the GNS3 Windows applicationĭownload the Windows installation and run through the setup wizard. Lets first look at the process to get our GNS3 Windows application pointed correctly at the GNS3 VM. Alas, we can though have the best of both worlds and use VIRL images in GNS3. When VIRL came out, I jumped on the license to obtain a copy and while I think it holds a lot of promise, it is a pain to get setup and maintain and I am not a fan of the VM Maestro interface. I have long been a fan of GNS3 and they have certainly made some tremendous strides in improving the application and extending its functionality. There has never been a better time for network learning and simulation as there are a lot of great products out there for the prospective network engineer, virtualization engineer, or server administrator to improve his or her skills in the networking arena. In this post we will take a look at how to actually get GNS3 Windows application talking to your GNS3 VM and then how to use VIRL images in GNS3. One of the awesome features of the new GNS3 VMs is that you can actually use your VIRL images in GNS3 as well! So if you hate the interface of VIRL, you can have the best of both worlds. Do whatever you need to do to copy ASDM.In the first post of the GNS3 VM series, we looked at how to setup GNS3 VM VMware ESXi. Thus, copy ASDM via SCP or from ASA console and use “copy” to get the file from a http or tftp server. If for some reason the 9.15-16 version doesn’t work for you, try 8.4 as well that I linked above, it was more stable.ĪSDM does work, however you need to copy it into the ASA BEFORE turning into multiple context mode due to not having a proper MGMT interface and not being able to copy files into contexts. If the ASA crashed on “invalid argument” while rebooting, just manually reboot it! For example mine crashed a lot on “invalid argument” while rebooting only. On this final reboot you should see the following output from “show mode” When they come back up, test switching to multiple context mode with the followingĬhanging into “mode multiple” requires yet another reboot however that’s it! Finally “write me” and reboot your ASA with “reload” (note if the ASA freezes on “reload” just manually power it off and on via GNS3 it will still work)ġ6. NOTE: applying the key takes A LONG time (5 minutes for me)ġ5. Once it is started, just apply the activation key (activation-key 0xb23bcf4a 0x1c713b4f 0x7d53bcbc 0xc4f8d09c 0x0e24c6b6) Leave defaults click next (it wont actually use 30GB)ġ4. Click “create” so we can create an empty harddrive, thin provisionedġ0. Name the Image something and click the “legacy ASA” boxĨ. On the top right click EDIT > Then Preferencesĥ. In case of 915-16 not working for you, please fall back to 8.4 ( )Ģ. Small issue with the 915-16 version: It required manual reload via gns3… The “reload” command hangs it most of the time. Requirements:ģ- Activate code for context license (activation-key 0xb23bcf4a 0x1c713b4f 0x7d53bcbc 0xc4f8d09c 0x0e24c6b6) Instead we will have to use ASA version 9.1.15-16 and activate it with a key IN GNS3. In this guide I will show you exactly how to get a working lab for ASA multi-context in GNS3.įirst be aware that you CANNOT use the virtual ASA image. How to Setup Multiple Context ASA in GNS3
